COURSE DESCRIPTION

This is a course designed to orient you with using Canvas as an observer. This course shares the same basic appearance and formatting as your child's courses here at CCS, and you will interact with it as a student. Therefore it will give you a first-hand look at what your child sees while providing how-to guides for observing your child in Canvas, by viewing grades, communicating with teachers, and keeping track of assignment details. In addition, the course contains vital information regarding school policies and resources.

This course is unattended and self-paced, meaning that there are no due dates and there is no actual teacher. However, the course does allow you to interact with the content and assignments.


COURSE OBJECTIVES

By the end of this course the learner will be able to:

  • Access his/her children’s Canvas accounts as an observer
  • View course information available to observers in Canvas
  • Receive Canvas notifications
  • Communicate with teachers through Canvas
  • Utilize the Canvas parent app for the above tasks

WHAT YOU SHOULD ALREADY KNOW

You should already know how to:

  • operate a computer, smartphone or tablet. 
  • be able to send and receive email.
  • download apps to the smartphone. 

COURSE MATERIALS

  • None required

TECHNOLOGY

For this course you will need the following:

  • a desktop computer with a modern Internet browser (Chrome [preferred], Safari, Edge, Firefox, etc.)
    or...
  • a mobile device such as a tablet or smartphone
  • an Internet connection.

GRADING

This is a sample section you might see in the syllabus for each course in which your child enrolled. Below is the CCS grading scale which is standard for all courses.

A 100–94% C 76–73%
A− 93–90% C− 72–70%
B+ 89–87% D+ 69–68%
B 86–83% D 67–66%
B− 82–80% D− 65%
C+ 79–77% F 64%

ASSIGNMENT CATEGORIES AND VALUES

Most of your child's courses will likely have categorized assignment groups which are weighted as a percentage of the overall grade. 

For example:

      • Tests - 45%
      • Homework - 25%
      • Participation - 10%
      • Exam - 20%

Some teachers may use a total points system in which the following formula is applied:

      • (Total Points Earned ÷ Total Points Possible) x 100% = Final Score
